CLINICAL PILLS: THE PAIN AFTER EPISIOTOMY

WHAT IS EPISIOTOMY?
An episiotomy is a surgical incision used to widen the opening of the vulva during the second stage of childbirth. The incision can be made with a scalpel or a pair of surgical scissors. There are four techniques that can be used in performing an episiotomy: 1) midline 2) mediolateral 3) lateral 4) ‘J’ shaped.

WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS TO PERFORM AN EPISIOTOMY?

- Protection of the child
- To decrease the length of the second stage of delivery
- Prevention of third degree lacerations to the perineum
- Preservation of the pelvic floor
- Complicated birthing situations such as forceps deliveries, breech births and easier passage of larger babies (e.g. to prevent the shoulder dystocia).
